Jimmy Clausen threw for a career-high 347 yards and three touchdown passes, and Notre Dame held on for a 28-21 victory Saturday over visiting Stanford.
Notre Dame's seventh straight victory over the Cardinal (3-3) looked as if it was going to be a rout when the Fighting Irish (4-1) were up 28-7 in the fourth quarter.
Stanford made a late run behind Tavita Pritchard. He threw a 1-yard pass to Jim Dray and a 10-yard TD pass to Doug Baldwin with six minutes left to close to within a touchdown.
The Cardinal got the ball back on its own 2 with 3:34 left but couldn't mount a drive. They had one last chance with eight seconds left, but Pat Kuntz recovered a fumble to end the game.
The Irish, who started last season 0-5, won their fifth straight home game after losing a school-record six straight at Notre Dame Stadium a year ago. The Cardinal hasn't won at Notre Dame Stadium since 1992.
Clausen completed 29 of 40 passes with no interceptions.
ALSO SATURDAYNAVY 33, AIR FORCE 27: Navy blocked two punts for touchdowns, Matt Harmon tied a school record with four field goals, and the visiting Midshipmen beat Air Force for a sixth straight time.
The victory gives the Midshipmen (4-2) a leg up in their quest for a sixth straight Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, the annual competition between Army, Navy and Air Force for service academy supremacy. They play Army in the last game of the season.
Blake Carter blocked Ryan Harrison's punt early in the fourth quarter, and Bobby Doyle pounced on it in the end zone, helping send the Midshipmen past Air Force (3-2) for their third straight win.
Carter also returned a blocked punt 25 yards for a score in the first quarter after Greg Shinego broke through the line and got a hand on it.
Jarod Bryant, filling in for an injured quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Harmon hit field goals of 35, 48, 44 and 32 yards to tie a school mark held by five other kickers.
TCU 41, SAN DIEGO STATE 7: Backup quarterback Marcus Jackson rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns in his first start this season to help host TCU defeat San Diego State.
Getting the start after Andy Dalton injured his right knee in a loss to top-ranked Oklahoma last weekend, Jackson went 10-of-19 passing for 115 yards and had scoring runs of 9 and 3 yards.
The junior also threw a touchdown pass just before halftime that gave TCU (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) a 20-0 lead.
San Diego State (1-4, 0-1) lost starting QB Ryan Lindley to a right shoulder injury in the second quarter. Lindley, who passed for 433 yards in a win over Idaho last week, was wearing a sling on the sideline.
LATE FRIDAYNO. 8 BYU 34, UTAH STATE 14: Max Hall threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, and BYU extended its winning streak to 15 games by beating Utah State.
The visiting Cougars (5-0) converted three turnovers into 17 points while pulling ahead 24-0 in the first quarter, then held on for their ninth straight victory over the Aggies despite some sloppiness.
Utah State (1-4) became the first team to score on BYU in nearly a month with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the Aggies were down 34-0 at the end of the third quarter.
