LUMBERTON - Authorities say nine North Carolina jail inmates have been charged with making wine behind bars.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Wednesday that the inmates were discovered making wine last month in the Robeson County jail. Assistant jailer Capt. Jeffrey Martin says they used food from their meal trays, especially sweet items, to make the wine in a plastic bag.

Officials say wine frequently is found in cells, and orange juice is a key item in making it. Officials say they are considering eliminating orange juice from the jail's menu.
