Regarding your April 29 article "Obama at UNC-CH: Time for new chapter":
The Smith Center was packed. I knew to expect a large crowd and motivating message, but I wasn't prepared to be moved by the faces around me. To my left, an older African-American woman and a retired white couple, each energized by Obama's plan not to tax their Social Security. In front of me, a UNC student with her dad and a friend, along with physics notes to study before Obama's arrival.
Despite exam week, students of visibly diverse backgrounds covered the gym floor, applauding alternative energy and affordable college tuition. Behind me, a retired white man cheered for government accountability. Next to him were a mother and her teenage daughter. All around the stadium, attendees were intermixed, enjoying the anticipation of their candidate.
I brought my son to experience Obama's inspirational and historic candidacy. I left with an extra gift -- a reminder of how far we have come as a society. The media can lump entire races, genders, and income-levels into different voting blocks, but I saw for myself that we are coming together as a society behind common goals -- and that has inspired me most of all.
