Empty Cuba claims

I am writing in regards to the May 8 article "President Bush scoffs at Cuba's 'empty gestures at reform' " concerning Bush's remarks toward Cuba's recent change in government. Our continued embargo on trade and travel with Cuba is not only hindering our businesses but also directly hurting the Cuban people and advancing the interests of the Castro brothers. The embargo has failed in that the Cuban people are taught to blame all of Cuba's faults on the U.S. government.

As a frequent world traveler, I am constantly disgusted with our American image. The world is not fooled by our antics. Instead of promoting democracy and striving to follow the strong ideals of our founding fathers, we have yet again failed in our foreign relations through directly withholding humanitarian aid from those in need.

I traveled to Cuba in March under a religious visa, and the Cuban people are speaking up more today than ever and are excited with the hopes for change that Raul Castro brings to the table.

We need to return to our roots and get our information correct before we make empty claims that affect the struggling lives of our neighbors.
