Meanspirited mess

I was having lunch with a friend before the N.C. attorney general's announcement about barring the children of undocumented parents from attending community college.

In referring to recent factory raids and subsequent deportations of Latinos, in North Carolina and in other states, I said to my friend, "I just can't believe how meanspirited we have become."

He said, "This isn't new. We have been meanspirited for a long time -- to African-Americans, to other immigrant groups, to women."

It is hard to acknowledge this as truth. I believe in a presidential primary debate, Mike Huckabee said, "America is better than this." Are we?
