Your Feb. 9 editorial "On the ballot" shed welcome light on the way Republicans and Democrats have colluded to silence other political voices in North Carolina.

As a Libertarian of 30 years standing, I have suffered through six of the incredibly grueling and expensive petition drives just to be able to have my party's voice heard. Each drive has costs hundreds of volunteer hours and about $100,000 in expenses. Besides that, it's simply wrong that citizens of a free country should face arbitrary barriers to give citizens more choices.

There are petition drives currently under way for both the Libertarian and the Green Parties. Recognizing that the courts are slow (the lawsuit mentioned was filed in September 2005), we have been gathering signatures to meet the nearly 70,000 signature requirement placed on us by the state of North Carolina.

More A Opinion

N.C. voters can help increase competition by going to the party Web sites (lpnc.org and ncgreenparty.org) to get copies of each petition. Sign them, and mail them in.
