Progress Energy veteran promoted

Jocelyn Bullock Thornton has been promoted to a vice president's position at Progress Energy, her 19th position with the company during a 35-year career.

As vice president of the Raleigh-based electric utility's supply chain organization, she will oversee a division with more than 250 people that purchases equipment, procures materials and services, operates warehouses, tracks inventory and fills orders.

A native of Warrenton, Thornton, 57, began working for the company in 1973 as a buyer, immediately after graduating from N.C. Wesleyan College. Her previous positions have included director of transportation and garages, manager of customer service call centers, and director of materials management for chemistry labs and nuclear operations. With her latest promotion, she joins the ranks of 52 vice presidents and senior vice presidents who run the company.

Progress has about 11,000 employees and serves 3.1 million customers in the Carolinas and Florida.

Jordan Domagalski joined Morrisville engineering firm Driesenga & Associates as survey crew chief in its survey department.

Scott Tippins joined the Principal Financial Group in Raleigh as a financial representative with Principal Life Insurance Co. and a Princor registered representative and financial adviser.

Michael Galiger was hired as manufacturing and engineering manager at Entegrion, a life sciences company in Research Triangle Park. Galiger will focus on product scale up, technology transfer and regulatory controls.

Hutchison Law Group partners Allen Baum and Josh Elliott are joining Chicago-based law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, which plans to establish a Triangle office. Both lawyers specialize in patent law.

Michael Weiner was hired as an accountant in the tax practice of Raleigh accounting firm Thomas, Judy and Tucker.

Beth Marushak joined Vaco Raleigh as technical recruiter in the information technology division. Vaco Raleigh is an executive placement and consulting firm that specializes in accounting and finance, information technology, operations and executive search.

Nikki Clemmons has been named commercial loan officer at Crescent State Bank's Wilmington office. Clemmons will be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective personal business relations with clients.

Stuart Westland was named account director at MSA, a marketing and communications company in Morrisville. Westland will oversee the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund, Mountain State University and Cree LED Lighting Solutions accounts.

Sandy Andrews joined Hummingbird Creative Group in Cary as an account executive. Hummingbird is a creative services company that specializes in building brand identities.

Bret T. Patterson was hired as a commercial lines sales executive for the Jacksonville branch of SIA Group, an insurance agency with offices in Raleigh, Jacksonville, Greenville, New Bern, Wallace and Burgaw.

Shannon Cook was hired as director of human resources at Hughes Pittman & Gupton, an accounting firm in Raleigh. Leslie Zanaglio was hired as director of Hughes Pittman & Gupton Academy, which focuses on leadership skills.

Kristi Burns was hired as an account executive in the account management department at Howard, Merrell & Partners in Raleigh. Burns will help manage the advertising and branding needs of three of the agency's clients: Colonial Bank, Foot Solutions and Central Aquatics.

Alexis Vaughn, former deputy director and chief operating officer at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh, was hired to head the sales and marketing division of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Va.

Jennifer Murray joined Raleigh professional services organization, NetStar-1, as senior account executive. She will work with clients, focusing on technologies that are driven by the integration of data, voice and video.

On the boards ...

The board of trustees for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Eastern North Carolina's chapter announces the following new members: Rex Bost, president of Bost Custom Homes; Deborah Boucher, an associate with Colliers Pinkard; Santiago Estrada, vice president, associate general counsel, corporate transactions with Quintiles Transnational; Joel Yashinsky, marketing officer, east division with McDonald's USA.

Richard K. Scher, professor of dermatology at UNC and head of the section for diagnosis and treatment of nail disorders, was appointed to the scientific advisory board at Chesson Labs, a Durham health-care products company.

Margie Fry, vice president of voice and security for East Carolina at Time Warner Cable, has been appointed to the NC 911 board by Gov. Mike Easley. Fry will be sworn in at the next board meeting Aug. 8.

Cary-based Enterprising Women magazine has named new members to its national advisory board. They are: Patricia Pope, owner of Pope & Associates based in Cincinnati, Ohio; Michelle D'Souza, owner of Unified Business Technologies based in Troy, Mich.; and Donna Vandiver, owner of The Vandiver Group based in St. Louis, Mo.
