CHAPEL HILL - The town will hold a public hearing Wednesday night on a proposal to set up a publicly funded local election program.

The town is the first in North Carolina to be authorized to establish a program to provide public funding to candidates for municipal office. The program would be voluntary. To receive public funding, candidates would have to accept strict fundraising and reporting requirements.

The council meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Town Hall, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Read a draft of the ordinance establishing the program at www.townofchapelhill.org/DocumentView.asp?DID=2226.
