APEX CADETS RECEIVE HONOR

Three members of Apex Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol recently were honored with the Spaatz award, the patrol's highest cadet honor. The recipients were Cadet Cols. Cassie Fletcher, Olivia Barrow and Kali Fletcher, all of Durham. The award, named after the first chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, Gen. Carl A. Spaatz, goes to cadets who demonstrate excellence in leadership, character, fitness and aerospace education. Cadets qualify for the award after devoting an average of five years to progress through 16 achievements in the cadet program. On average, only two cadets in a thousand earn the award. Cassie Fletcher and Kali Fletcher are entering the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Barrow will be enrolling in Durham Tech and UNC-Chapel Hill. Students ages 12 to 18 can join the squadron to learn about aerospace, aviation and leadership. Meetings are Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hope Community Church at 821 Buck Jones Road, Cary. For more information, call Carol Beaver at 612-1506.
