Charlotte officer killed in crash

CHARLOTTE - Authorities say an off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer has been killed in a car crash.

The Charlotte Observer identified the officer Monday as 47-year-old Detective James Kolbay, who worked narcotics.

The wreck occurred about 6 p.m. Sunday in Stanley, just north of Charlotte near Lake Norman. Witnesses told state troopers Kolbay seemed to lose control of his car before hitting another vehicle and driving into a field. No one else was injured.

Police officials said Kolbay was a longtime member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
