Not 'whining'

As a victim of a heinous crime several years ago in Atlanta, I am horrified by gubernatorial candidate Beverly Perdue's statement that Pat McCrory is "whining" about crime (news story, Oct. 1).

Phil Gramm may have "misspoken" when he stated a few weeks ago that Americans have become "whiners" about the economy, but Perdue's use of that most inappropriate word regarding the serious crime issue we face in this state is not so easily brushed aside.

From a personal perspective, I remember crying. I remember sobbing. And I remember my family, friends, police and district attorney in Fulton County who were all by my side exhibiting that anguish, too.

But there was never any "whining." And McCrory is not "whining" about crime.

What he is doing is paying attention and trying to do something about a real issue. In fact, he's trying to prevent what happened to me from potentially happening to others. And for that courage, I am most grateful to McCrory.
