Carolina Hurricanes' Kids 'N Community Foundation announced that 20 charities will get $220,169 in grants during the foundation's spring and summer cycle. The grants bring the foundation's annual total to $578,094, distributed to 37 statewide charitable organizations. Among the recipients of the spring and summer grants: April's Angels, The Caring Community Foundation, the John Avery Boys and Girls Club in Durham, Communities in Schools of Wake and Durham counties and the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association. One new grant recipient is Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh.
Mulkey Engineers & Consultants began a companywide volunteer effort to commemorate its 15th anniversary. Employees will work with Stop Hunger Now, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Atlanta Community Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank to raise awareness of the growing hunger crisis. Activities will include sorting food for food drives, stocking shelves and packaging high-protein meals for distribution internationally.
Eighteen Smith Anderson lawyers volunteered to answer questions from North Carolinians as part of the N.C. Bar Association's statewide Public Service Day. The project was part of the association's "4-ALL" activities, designed to address problems related to providing legal services to North Carolina's underprivileged. More than 10 Kilpatrick Stockton lawyers provided counsel on several topics for the residents of Summit House in Raleigh, while other staff helped decorate the house, organize a storage closet and waterproof an outdoor storage shed. Volunteers also took the children on a field trip to Marbles Kids Museum.
John S. Clark Co. will donate $5,000 in academic scholarships to 10 students at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington as part of the general building contractor's 50th anniversary celebration.
Summit House in Raleigh received a $25,000 grant from the Nationwide Foundation. The grant will be used to help with transportation costs and to replace an aging van.
Action for Children North Carolina received a $2,500 contribution from the WeyerHaeuser Co. Foundation. Funds from the grant will help to produce and distribute the N.C. School Readiness Report. EMC Corp. donated $10,000 to the organization.
