CHAPEL HILL - The Orange County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday agreed to proceed with final negotiations with UNC-Chapel Hill to use gas from the county landfill.

The university has said it wants the gas from the landfill to power its planned Carolina North development and help make the project carbon neutral.

The project would cost an estimated $5.5 million to start, and could begin in 2010, according to county documents. The plan calls for a 20-year contract, with the university paying the county a 15 percent value of the energy generated, as well as carbon credits.

The county and university are to bring a final contract back to the board in August.
