WAL-MART SCHOLARS: Students across the Triangle won $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarships this week from the Wal-Mart Foundation. Students are chosen based on financial need, academic record, test scores, community involvement and work experience.

CALLING ALL VALEDICTORIANS: The N&O will publish a special section June 13 highlighting valedictorians at Triangle high schools. Please provide us, by this Friday, with a photo (preferably a head shot), along with your name, school, parents, address, GPA, class size, college plans, favorite leisure activity, favorite book, favorite movie and what you want to say on graduation day.

WAKE COUNTY

STUDENTS HONORED: The Wake County school board honored 22 students this month with Spotlight on Students awards. The district honors one student a year at each school for outstanding achievements and accomplishments.

The elementary school winners are Guadalupe Montes Bermudez, 13, a fifth-grader at Douglas; Chloe Hudock, 10, a fourth-grader at Fuquay-Varina; Andrew Crater, 11, a fifth-grader at Highcroft Drive; Andrea Tiara Baker, 12, a fifth-grader at Holly Ridge; Antonio Watson, 12, a fifth-grader at Hunter; Lindsay Stanley, 10, a fourth-grader at Leesville Road; Martha Olmos, 12, a fifth-grader at North Forest Pines; Bdrelden Abushouk, 11, a fifth-grader at Northwoods; Yajaira Ramirez, 11, a fifth-grader at Olive Chapel; Bre'ahna Tucker, 10, a fifth-grader at Sanford Creek; Anna Zhao, 11, a fourth-grader at Smith; Jessica Wu, 10, a fifth-grader at Turner Creek; Kaeleigh Siobhan Wayland, 11, a fifth-grader at Willow Springs; Taylor Prince, 12, a fifth-grader at Yates Mill; and Zoe Luglan, 9, a third-grader at York.

The middle school winners are Kim Nguyen, 14, an eighth-grader at Carnage; Lauren Magdefrau, 12, a sixth-grader at East Garner; Maranda Nicole Judd, 12, a sixth-grader at Holly Ridge; Zaira Diaz Aguilar, 14, a seventh-grader at North Garner; and Maria Kelly Soares, 13, an eighth-grader at West Cary.

The high school winners, both seniors, are Nolan S. Jack, 18, at Garner and Bryson Hill, 17, at Millbrook.

DURHAM COUNTY

STUDENT ATHLETES REWARDED: The Durham Sports Club will host its annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Night at 6 p.m. today at the Croasdaile Country Club at 3800 Farm Gate Ave.

Bucky Waters, a former Duke University men's basketball team head coach, will be the guest speaker.

Several student athletes are scheduled to receive scholarships at the event. Membership to The Durham Sports Club is open to the public. Contact Jon Fletcher at (919) 475-1599.

JOHNSTON COUNTY

YOUNG TEACHERS: About 30 Smithfield-Selma High School students taught Selma Boys and Girls Club members last week about how to handle emergency situations, first aid and good dental hygiene through role playing, puppets and crafts.

The high school's Interact Club, Unity Club and Step Team used money from a $300 "Mix It Up" grant from Alabama to cover supplies, such as dental kits and booklets on emergency information.
