HILLSBOROUGH - A skunk found in a dog's mouth in Hillsborough on Sunday tested positive for rabies, the 11th confirmed case in Orange County this year.

Residents in the Larkspur Lane and Miller Road area heard barking and went outside. One removed the skunk with gloves and called Animal Control to remove the skunk for testing. Animals that have come in contact with humans and pets or are thought to have come in contact with them are sent to the state lab for testing.

Two dogs and a cat at the home were already vaccinated against rabies and were being taken for a booster shot within 72 hours, as required by state law. If they had not been vaccinated, the pets would have had to be killed or quarantined for six months.

If you suspect possible exposure from a rabid animal, call 911.

The Orange County Animal Services Department will hold $5 rabies clinics in August.
