Firefighters in Raleigh and Durham will hit the streets in coming days, aiming to fill their boots with money for children and adults with muscle-wasting diseases.

Raleigh firefighters will collect donations on Saturday. In Durham, firefighters will hold a similar Fill-the-Boot campaign from July 31 through Aug. 2.

According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Fill-the-Boot drives are the primary way firefighters have raised more than $320 million for the organization since 1953. Last year, the Durham and Raleigh firefighters each raised $12,000 in their separate boot drives.
