U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick called Tuesday for North Carolina to begin determining the citizenship of inmates entering prisons.

Myrick said the program would resemble the screening at the Mecklenburg jail, where about 2,600 illegal immigrants have been identified since May 2006.

Myrick wants state prisons to check citizenship during inmates' initial screening, when officials fingerprint and photograph them.

More A Front

Illegal immigrants would be turned over to federal authorities after their sentences and deported, Myrick said.

Myrick, a Charlotte Republican, said she sent a letter to Gov. Mike Easley on Monday, urging him to enter an agreement with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to begin screening.
