In reference to the May 13 letter "Chancellor choice," I, too, am thrilled at UNC's choice of Holden Thorp. He would seem to be a perfect match for UNC-Chapel Hill, and I think we are very fortunate to hire him.
I'm afraid that the letter-writer, however, was not aware that a "headhunter" was hired to find the new chancellor to the tune of $100,800-plus. As quoted in an Oct. 24 article in The News & Observer, Art Padilla (an NCSU professor and UNC-CH alumnus who has written a book on university presidents) said that Carolina is a premier university in America -- and implied that there was no need to hire a consulting firm to recruit a chancellor. R. William Funk and Associates (a consulting firm from Dallas that was also searching for a chancellor for the California educational system simultaneously) was hired.
