CRAZY EIGHTH: Stefan Gartrell hit his second homer of the game in the eighth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and lift Birmingham past Carolina before 3,853 fans at Regions Park on Tuesday night in Birmingham, Ala.

Gartrell hit a two-run shot in the first against Gaby Hernandez to help stake the Barons to a 3-0 lead. Carolina tied the score in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer by John Raynor.

MUDCATS MOVES: Carolina catcher Brett Hayes was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque, infielder Lee Mitchell was placed on the temporary inactive list because of the anticipated birth of his first child on Tuesday, and Smelin Perez was assigned to the Mudcats and was 0-for-3 on Tuesday against Birmingham.
