Meet Scotty McCreery
Scotty McCreery, 17, is the Garner High School junior who has made a splash on this season of "American Idol." Scotty, a baseball player for the Garner High Trojans, first impressed the "Idol" judges in auditions held in Milwaukee, Wis., last year. They were shocked at the deep voice coming from the baby-faced Scotty on the songs "Your Man" and "Put Some Drive In Your Country."
("Your Man" later became Scotty's go-to song during auditions, with its familiar opening refrain, "Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low.")
Scotty survived "Idol's" Hollywood auditions, then was selected to the final 24 by judges. Viewers then selected him as their "American Idol" for the show's 10th season. Scotty is the state's second "Idol" champion; Fantasia Barrino of High Point was the winner in Season 3.
He tends to sing country songs when he can, but has had to branch out into pop, Motown and Elton John tunes as the competition continues.
Scotty is the son of Judy and Mike McCreery of Garner, both of whom have been interviewed for the show. Other family members, his music teachers and mentors, his baseball team and his hometown friends also have been shown on TV.
