A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday for Dick Thompson, the longtime public relations director at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
Thompson, who spent 40 years at the track, died Wednesday at 74.
He was working as a racing writer for The Roanoke Times in 1966 when the late track founder, H. Clay Earles, hired him to help publicize events, said W. Clay Campbell, Earles' grandson and now the track's president.
Thompson was the track's first public relations director and only the second full-time public relations representative in NASCAR, the speedway said in a news release.
The track's press box is named for him.
The service will be at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Martinsville, with Pastor Kathy Gochenour officiating.
Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening at Norris Funeral Services, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and other times at the home.
