Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors by beating Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday at Basel, Switzerland.

The three-time defending champion was solid on serves to make it six matches against the 51st-ranked Seppi without dropping a set.

"It was a bit tougher [than the first round], but I was able to raise my game at a few crucial moments, and that was the difference," said Federer, who rested through October.

"I recuperated and worked a bit to get in shape and can play maybe this [late] season in good health, which last year wasn't the case."

Fifth-seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic beat France's Florent Serra 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (1).

Valencia Open: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired in the first round Wednesday with a wrist injury while trailing 6-7 (3), 6-0, 3-0 to Mikhail Youzhny at Valencia, Spain.

The third-seeded Frenchman had dropped nine straight games before quitting with the left wrist problem. Tsonga had dominated the tiebreaker by using a drop shot and then an ace to take a 5-2 lead before clinching the first set when Youzhny returned wide.

Fifth-seeded Gilles Simon of France defeated Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Toyota leaving Formula One

Toyota is pulling out of Formula One racing.

The world's largest automaker announced Wednesday it needs to cut costs and focus on its core business.

"Based on the current economic environment, we realize we have no choice but to withdraw from Formula One," Toyota president Akio Toyoda said at a news conference. "This has been a very painful decision for the company."

Toyota follows Honda Motor Co. as the second major Japanese automaker to withdraw from the sport in the last 11 months. Honda pulled out last December amid worsening economic conditions. Brawn GP, which took over the old Honda team, won the 2009 F1 championship.

Toyota officials called the withdrawal from F1 complete, making a return to the sport when and if conditions improve unlikely.

Norman to miss tournament

Greg Norman's slower-than-expected recovery from shoulder surgery will force him to miss next month's Australian Open.

Tournament officials said that Norman was advised by his doctors not to play competitive golf again this year following arthroscopic surgery in September.

The Australian Open will be at the New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney from Dec. 3-6. Golf Australia said Norman will also sit out his signature event in Florida, the Shark Shootout, in the week after the Australian Open.

Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott and John Daly are entered in the Australian Open, the second of three tournaments on the Australian late-year circuit.

The Australian Masters, featuring Tiger Woods' first appearance in Australia since the Presidents Cup in 1998, is next week at Kingston Heath in Melbourne.

Frys.com Open going to California: The Frys.com Open is leaving Arizona for a temporary home at CordeValle Resort in northern California, putting it closer to the title sponsor's corporate headquarters.

The Fall Series event again will be held in October 2010.
