NASCAR wants France info kept from Mayfield

NASCAR has asked a federal court to stop lawyers for suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield from collecting information from the ex-wife of chairman Brian France.

Mayfield's attorneys subpoenaed Megan France last week requesting documents about a lawsuit filed against her by Brian France. The attorneys also asked for joint tax returns and mail addressed to Brian France.

NASCAR filed a motion in U.S. District Court on Monday asking that Megan France be barred from producing the documents.

Mayfield wins, but the fight isn't over

If the Jeremy Mayfield saga was a movie, you know how it would turn out.

The bad guys and good guys would be far more clear-cut. Mayfield would be cast as the hero, fighting the corporate "Man" in the person of NASCAR.

Newly free Mayfield would haul his No. 41 Toyota down to Daytona Beach, enter Saturday night's big race and win it with a last-lap pass. A NASCAR official would sheepishly admit in Victory Lane that maybe Mayfield's positive drug test did have some problems. Mayfield would announce a huge new sponsor during his postrace press conference, kiss his wife and scream, "Just say no to drugs!"

NASCAR drug policy hits speed bumps

In a U.S. District courtroom this month, Charlotte attorney William Diehl launched a defense of his client, Jeremy Mayfield, by targeting the NASCAR drug policy that led to Mayfield's suspension earlier this year.

That policy, according to Diehl, was so open-ended that NASCAR could administer any penalty for any substance it deemed dangerous, even if a driver didn't learn it was banned until after a positive test. "If they decide to ban Coca-Cola or coffee or orange juice, their argument is, we can," Diehl said.

NASCAR's response? We can, but we wouldn't.

Doctor: Mayfield was told

The administrator of NASCAR's drug-testing program said Monday he personally told Jeremy Mayfield what banned substance was found in his positive test.

Dr. David Black, CEO of Aegis Sciences Corp., which runs the testing program, said he specifically identified the drug in several conversations with the Sprint Cup driver over a three-day period after NASCAR suspended him.

On Saturday, Mayfield said he was never told what drug caused the positive test and has yet to receive a copy of the results.

Mayfield puts cars, guns and other goods up for bid

CATAWBA, N.C. Jeremy Mayfield sat in the back of his large barn Friday morning about 800 miles from where NASCAR's season-ending weekend was kicking off. Several hundred people surrounded him, listening intently as a fast-speaking auctioneer sold dozens of items.

Banned from driving by NASCAR after testing positive for methamphetamines, Mayfield has become an auction fanatic. Only this time, he was selling his own stuff, ranging from a second home, land, cars, dirt bikes and bulldozers to weed-whackers, humidifiers and sunglasses.

If it was all sold by the end of the day it would be worth about $5 million, money needed to help his ongoing court fight to be reinstated to the sport.
