Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Pedro Martinez says he's ready for the postseason as the veteran will take the mound for Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 37-year-old Martinez hasn't pitched in the playoffs since 2004 when he helped lead the Red Sox to the World Series title. His start Friday against the Dodgers will come in an odd situation as the three-time Cy Young Award winner began his major league career with the Dodgers in 1992 and also pitched for LA the following season.
"It's going to be special, especially bringing back memories about my start here," said Martinez. "I was born in this place, and I hope this is not the last one that I pitch here, but if it is, it would be a great joy to actually do it in the same place I started."
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel named Martinez the Game 3 starter against Colorado in the Division Series, but when that contest was postponed due to snow the Phils switched and went with J.A. Happ as the starter.
For Martinez, this will be his first start since September 30 and just his second since September 19. He went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine outings this season.
"We feel like the other day when we were watching him in a simulated game, he was throwing the ball very good," said Manuel. "As a matter of fact he was throwing pretty hard, and his command was good, and he's had enough rest and his experience and everything. I think the biggest part about his pitching will be his command. I feel like he's always pretty sharp with his command and control. I feel like this is a good -- this is where he started, this is a good ballpark for him."
Former Phillie Vicente Padilla will pitch for the Dodgers Friday afternoon.
