Giants, Sanchez avoid arbitration

The San Francisco Giants and left- hander Jonathan Sanchez avoided salary arbitration on Tuesday with the two sides agreeing on a one-year deal.

Sanchez went 8-12 with a 4.24 earned run average in 32 games (29 starts) for the Giants last season. Of course, though, his season was highlighted with his July 10 no-hitter of the San Diego Padres.

The 27-year-old Sanchez, who had a career-high 11 strikeouts in the no-no, became the first Giant to throw a no-hitter since John Montefusco on September 29, 1976, and the first southpaw to do so since Mike McComick accomplished the feat in a five-inning start at Philadelphia, June 12, 1959.

Giants, Wilson agree to 1-year deal

Brian Wilson and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a $4,437,500, one-year deal on Saturday, avoiding an arbitration hearing.

The Giants confirmed to The Associated Press that the sides settled at the midpoint of what each proposed in arbitration.

Wilson has spent the past two of his four major league seasons as San Francisco's full-time closer, recording 79 saves during that span and going to the All-Star game in 2008. The hard-throwing right-hander has a career record of 11-13 with a 3.73 ERA and 86 saves.

Giants, Dodgers rekindle their rivalry

A sellout crowd of 40,522 went to a ballgame at AT&T Park on Monday night, and a Giants-Dodgers rivalry broke out.

Sporadic fights in the stands gave off a Candlestick vibe. The heckling of Manny Ramirez came right on cue. Giants manager Bruce Bochy even argued his way to an ejection.

Chants of "Beat L.A." were more vengeful, and the game itself had more meaning than past editions, courtesy of an upstart Giants club nipping at the Los Angeles Dodgers' obnoxious-blue cleats.

Sanchez throws surprise gem

Jonathan Sanchez is not a Cy Young award winner like Randy Johnson or Barry Zito. He is not going to the All-Star Game like Tim Lincecum or Matt Cain.

When he took the mound Friday night, he was the problem child in a rotation of pitching prodigies.

But suddenly, surprisingly, and in the span of nine no-hit innings, Sanchez earned a venerated and lasting place in Giants history.

Pablo Sandoval went 2-for-4 and smacked the game-winning homer in the top of the 10th inning to lift the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres, 4-3, in the season finale for both clubs.

Ryan Webb (2-1) started the top of the 10th for the Padres and was greeted with Sandoval's blast to center.

"It was fitting that he hit the home run to win the ballgame for us," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "These guys came out on the last day and played hard, I'm proud of them. It was a great finish for us."
