Ichiro, Hunter win ninth straight Gold Glove Award

Outfielders Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners and Torii Hunter of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim each won their ninth consecutive Gold Glove Award on Tuesday, when the American League winners were announced.

Each won their first Gold Glove in 2001 and have been honored every year since. Joining Suzuki and Hunter in the outfield was the Orioles' Adam Jones, who won his first such award.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco, Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, and New York shortstop Derek Jeter filled out the AL infield honors.

Jeter named SI's Sportsman of the Year

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was selected as Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year for 2009.

Jeter helped the Yankees to their 27th World Series title this season and his fifth championship in 14 years with the storied franchise. He is the first Yankee to receive the coveted honor from Sports Illustrated.

The 35-year-old Yankee captain had a banner campaign in 2009. He hit .334 to finish third in the American League in batting, was fourth in runs scored with 107 and was second with 212 hits.

Jeter, Teixeira win Gold Gloves

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter won his fourth Gold Glove on Tuesday, joining teammate and first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League's top fielders.

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki both won for the ninth straight season. First-time winners were Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle.

Pujols nabs second straight NL MVP Award

For the second straight year and the third time in the last five seasons, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has been named the National League's Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

This time, though, he was a unanimous choice. Pujols placed first on all 32 ballots cast by two writers from each NL city to receive a total of 448 points to easily outdistance Florida's Hanley Ramirez, as he became the first repeat winner of this award since Barry Bonds won four in a row from 2001-04.

He is also the sixth NL player to be a unanimous selection and the first since Bonds in 2002.

Rollins nabs third straight Gold Glove

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins won his third straight Gold Glove Award on Wednesday, when the National League winners were announced.

Rollins, who made just six errors in 155 games this past season for the National League champions, becomes the first NL shortstop to win three straight since New York's Rey Ordonez did it from 1997-1999.

Joining Rollins in the infield were Los Angeles second baseman Orlando Hudson, who took home his third NL Gold Glove and fourth overall despite splitting time late in the season with Ronnie Belliard; first baseman Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres; and Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who became the first National to be rewarded for his defense.
