Durham County well reminder

Durham County health officials are urging residents to also conserve well water in this drought-stricken region.

Although much attention has been focused on municipal water systems and the restrictions being imposed, Robert Brown, Durham County's environmental health director, warned that well users could cause a significant drop in groundwater tables.

Shallow wells generally show the first sign of a falling water table, Brown said. As the trickle of water from those wells dries up, people often dig deeper.

Meeting on water supply

A regular meeting of the Durham County Board of Health and a public hearing to repeal local regulations governing water supply wells pre-empted by new state well rules will be held on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. in the auditorium at the Durham County Health Department, 414 E. Main St.

The meeting will include discussion of the proposed Durham County Board of Health rules governing the permitting and inspection of water supply wells not intended for human consumption in Durham County.

Suspect charged in shooting

Eric Russell Oliver, 19, of South Elm Street was charged Wednesday with the shooting death Oct. 15 of Jeffrey Lee Wells.

Witnesses told police that someone got out of a vehicle and shot Wells as he stood in front of a Walker Street home. Wells, 22, of Kingston Mill Court was pronounced dead at the scene.

Oliver remained at the Durham County jail Wednesday with no bail.

County seeks power to limit well-drilling

Union County, first in the drought-stricken Charlotte region to enact mandatory water restrictions, now wants to control its residents' wells.

The county hopes to limit well- drilling and also require existing well owners to comply with water restrictions.

The county commissioners are asking the General Assembly for the authority to regulate wells during a drought. They say it's an effort to preserve the county's groundwater for drinking instead of squandering it on lawn irrigation.
