Genesis Home to celebrate 20th anniversary with gala

Genesis Home is marking its 20 th year of keeping entire homeless families together while they get back on their feet.

An anniversary gala event, "The Path Home," is set today from 7 to 10 p.m. in Bay 7 at the American Tobacco Historic District, 318 Blackwell St.

The event will feature past and present staff, a new mini-documentary about Genesis Home's history and growth and representatives from the 350 families that have received help from the nonprofit organization.

Incident imperils Duke's image

It should have been another triumphant spring at Duke University, with the women's basketball team in the Final Four and the most competitive admissions pool on record.

But as acceptance letters went out last week to more than 3,000 prospective freshmen, the university faced an unimaginable March madness. A gang-rape investigation of the men's lacrosse team sank Duke into a tawdry mess that made national headlines and played over and over in the 24-hour news cycle.

The situation has exposed serious issues of race, gender and class division. And it's dealt a devastating setback to the university's often fragile relationship with its hometown.

Diabetes forum set

The Durham County Public Health Department will host a family diabetes forum Saturday at Durham Regional Hospital.

The forum is part of a three-month awareness and prevention campaign for diabetes.

It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

March, rally to fight rape

In the city where sexual assault charges against three Duke lacrosse players became a national sensation, protesters gathered Saturday to decry sexual violence.

The event, called the National Day of Truthtelling, drew about 250 people from the Triangle and beyond for a march, rally and afternoon of educational programs.

Organizers were quick to say that the event was not a response to this month's dismissal of charges against the three lacrosse players. But the case provided an undercurrent for the event, which included a stop at the home where an escort service dancer who was later discredited reported being gang-raped during a team party.
