Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey and Florida Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan have been named the Jackie Robinson Award winners as the top rookies in the American and National League, respectively, as voted on by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Bailey, Oakland's first Rookie of the Year winner since Huston Street in 2005, placed first on 13 of the 28 ballots cast and received a total of 88 points. He was also second on six and third on five other ballots to finish 23 points ahead of Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus, who placed first on eight ballots. Detroit righty Rick Porcello finished third and received seven first-place votes.
It marks the eighth time that an A's player has won the rookie award, tying the New York Yankees for the most winners in the league. The overall mark is held by the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League with 16.
Bailey's 26 saves were far and away the most among AL rookie relief pitchers, while his 1.84 ERA was also the best among first-year hurlers. Bailey had 24 walks and 91 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings, in which he allowed only 47 hits.
Opponents batted .167 against Bailey, who is the fourth closer to be honored with this award.
Coghlan, meanwhile, edged Philadelphia Phillies lefty J.A. Happ by 11 points, placing first on 17 of 32 ballots cast by two writers in each league city. He was also second on six and third on two other ballots for 105 points, based on the 5-3-1 tabulation system.
He is the third Marlin rookie to be rewarded, joining Dontrelle Willis (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2006).
Coghlan's 47 hits during August were the most by an NL rookie since Wally Moon had 52 hits in a month with the Cardinals in 1954. He also led all rookies in several categories, such as batting average (.321), runs (84), hits (162), doubles (31), total bases (232), multi-hit games (51) and on-base percentage (.390).
Four other players received first-place votes in the NL, as Happ (10), Atlanta's Tommy Hanson (2), Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutcheon (2) and Milwaukee's Casey McGehee (1) all joined Coghlan.
Chicago's Randy Wells picked up a second-place vote to finish fifth, while Pittsburgh's Garret Jones received two third-place votes to finish sixth, San Diego's Everth Cabrera, Colorado's Dexter Fowler, Arizona's Gerardo Parra and Colby Rasmus of the St. Louis Cardinals all received a third-place vote to round out the balloting.
In the AL, Tampa Bay's Jeff Niemann finished fourth, while Gordon Beckham of Chicago and Bailey's teammate, Brett Anderson, finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
