MLB Hall of Fame announces non-player candidates

The National Baseball Hall of Fame released the names of 20 former major league managers, umpires and executives on Tuesday that will be considered for induction in 2010.

Two Veterans Committees will vote on who will be inducted, and the results will be announced on December 7 at baseball's annual Winter Meetings.

There are two separate ballots -- each with 10 names -- one consisting of managers and umpires, and another with executives and pioneers of the sport.

Development foreseen in Johnson case

William Barber II, president of the state's NAACP chapter, said Monday he has news of a "major" development in the case of James Johnson, a Wilson man who was jailed for three years for a murder he says he did not commit.

Barber refused to provide details, but is holding a press conference at the Durham office of the NAACP at 11 a.m. today.

Johnson was charged with rape and murder in 2004 after the death of Brittany Willis, a Wilson teenager who was carjacked at a shopping center. Another man is serving a life sentence for the crime. He originally implicated Johnson, then recanted.

Coroner: Casey Johnson's death diabetes related

Socialite Casey Johnson died of a complication of diabetes, the Los Angeles County coroner said Thursday.

Johnson, 30, an heir to the Johnson & Johnson health care products fortune, died of diabetic ketoacidosis, the coroner said in a brief statement. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition caused by lack of insulin and sky-high blood sugar.

An autopsy was conducted Jan. 5, a day after Johnson's body was found at her home. The coroner's office said it would not be able to discuss specifics until the autopsy report and toxicology results become available within two weeks.

Magic: Heels a tall order for Michigan State

DETROIT - Even Magic Johnson thinks it will be a tall order for Michigan State to defeat North Carolina.

Shortly before tipoff Monday night, Johnson and Larry Bird held a news conference commemorating their historic NCAA championship meeting 30 years ago. Johnson and Michigan State defeated Bird and Indiana State 75-64 in the game that scored the highest television ratings in the history of the championship.

Later, the two carried on an unforgettable rivalry with Johnson leading the Los Angeles Lakers and Bird carrying the Boston Celtics in almost yearly trips to the NBA finals.

R.H. Donnelley names Johnson new vice president

Yellow pages publisher R.H. Donnelley has named former 7-Eleven executive Sylvester J. Johnson as vice president, corporate controller and chief accounting officer.

Johnson, 49, most recently was vice president and controller at convenience story chain 7-Eleven. Previously, he was vice president of finance for The Dallas Morning News and senior finance manager for Yum! Brands/Pepsico.

Johnson has a bachlor's degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky.
