GREENSBORO – One thing is indisputable: D.J. Augustin is back to full health.

An abdominal strain robbed Augustin of his explosion and change-of-direction the second half of last season. But Thursday he drove his way to 18 free throws, making 16, in the Charlotte Bobcats' 108-101 preseason victory over the New Orleans Hornets at Greensboro Coliseum.

Augustin, a second-year point guard, finished with 22 points and the Bobcats totaled 58 free-throw attempts.

That was partially the Bobcats' aggressiveness and partially the replacement officials. As coach Larry Brown joked, "the game only took four hours.'' That was an exaggeration, but it did seem to drag on forever.

"We were in the bonus a lot and coach said, 'Don't settle for jump shots.' '' Augustin said of his big night.

Augustin played over 29 minutes – by far the most of any Bobcat – because starting point guard Raymond Felton suffered a rib injury in the first half. Felton said Hornets center Sean Marks chucked him on a screen-and-roll play.

"Just get me some football pads and I'll be ready tomorrow'' for practice, said Felton, who played just two minutes in the second half.

Augustin's biggest play was actually a pass; he found forward Stephen Graham wide open for a 3-pointer with two minutes left to open a six-point lead. Previous to that, the Hornets made up a 21-point deficit to lead with 6 ½ minutes left.

Some highlights and lowlights:

After struggling in the preseason opener in Cleveland, small forward Gerald Wallace scored 14 points by generating 10 trips to the foul line.

Graham continues to impress. He finished with 15 points and six rebounds, and he looks safe to make the regular-season roster.

"He's been that way every day in practice,'' coach Larry Brown said of Graham's productivity. "He defends, he makes shots, he tries to rebound. He's a real pro.''

Among the rookies, forward Derrick Brown continues to look more polished than Gerald Henderson. Henderson again struggled with his shot. He was 1-of-4 from the field and 4-of-7 from the foul line.

Larry Brown wasn't particularly happy with how the big men played. Nazr Mohammed, Gana Diop and Alexis Ajinca combined for just 11 points and 11 rebounds.

"Our bigs have got to do a better job of setting screens without getting called for fouls,'' Brown said.
