Observations: Flagrant foul rule explained

The local media that covers the Bobcats got its annual meeting with a refereeing crew before Saturday's game. Most interesting thing I heard: An effort to play the ball no longer necessarily gets a defender out of being called for a flagrant foul.

Even if a defender is making "a legitimate basketball play," he can now be called for a flagrant if the officials believe he was reckless or there was excessive potential for injury.

That seemingly explains the flagrant foul called recently against Bobcats guard Flip Murray. It was obvious he was going for the ball, but was still called for a flagrant one (the lesser offense).

Blazers guard Jerryd Bayless tripped over a carpet-covered step near the court and had to be carried to the locker room before the game.

It turned out to be a minor sprain - Bayless played - but the Bobcats might want to look into that before someone gets seriously hurt.

Bobcats coach Larry Brown continues to be a big fan of ex-Bobcats forward Juwan Howard, now with the Blazers. Brown loved how Howard took to mentoring young players last season.

The Blazers were on the fence late-summer about whether to re-sign Howard. The Bobcats made a late pitch to re-sign him, but had limited funds up against the luxury-tax threshold. So the Blazers - not a team reluctant to spend - outbid them.

Raja Bell was pretty hot after the game upon learning his wife's car had been hit outside the arena. Bell's complaint: He doesn't understand why players' families aren't allowed to park inside Time-Warner Arena, as the players and - according to Bell - some season ticket-holders are.
