Nets assistant coach Del Harris resigns

Longtime NBA coach Del Harris has resigned as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets.

The Nets issued a statement from Harris minutes after they lost 97-93 to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

Harris joined the team in late November after general manager Kiki Vandeweghe was named the interim coach following the firing of Lawrence Frank after the Nets lost their first 17 games.

Al Harrington poured in a game-best 23 points to lead the New York Knicks past the New Jersey Nets, 115-107, in the preseason opener for both teams at Times Union Center.

Wilson Chandler added 21 points and seven rebounds for the Knicks, who got 20 points and nine boards from David Lee. Jared Jeffries tallied 11 points in the triumph.

Chris Douglas-Roberts finished with 21 points and Brook Lopez 19 for the Nets. Bobby Simmons gave 16 points and Devin Harris 14 in defeat. Terrence Williams chipped in 11 points and seven boards.

Jonas Jerebko scored 20 points in a perfect 9-of-9 performance from the field and pulled down seven rebounds in Detroit's 99-92 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Richard Hamilton poured in 17 points, while Rodney Stuckey contributed 10 points and 11 assists for the Pistons, who have won two of three since a five- game skid.

"I thought we did a great job tonight sharing the ball," Pistons guard Will Bynum said. "Most of all, we made shots tonight. That's the key."

New Jersey Nets (0-3) at Charlotte Bobcats (1-2), 7 p.m.

The last time the New Jersey Nets lost four straight games to start a season John Calipari was head coach. Since then Calipari has achieved success at the collegiate ranks, while the Nets have made a few deep runs in the playoffs but no championships to show for it.

Now the Nets will try to stop a three-game season-opening slide when they pay a visit to the Charlotte Bobcats Monday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. New Jersey fell to 0-3 for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign following Saturday's 123-104 setback at Washington, as Chris Douglas-Roberts led the way with 25 points.

Rafer Alston finished with 20 points and eight assists for New Jersey, which lost to Minnesota and Orlando before Saturday's setback. The last time the Nets opened a season with four consecutive losses was when they kicked off the 1996-97 campaign under Calipari with five straight defeats.

Prince's late dunk lifts Pistons over Nets 97-93

Tayshaun Prince slammed down a tiebreaking dunk on an inbounds play with 45.6 seconds left and the Detroit Pistons snapped a five-game losing streak with a 97-93 victory over the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night.

Richard Hamilton had 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, including three free throws in the final 21.3 seconds, as the Pistons won for only the fifth time in 24 games.

Rodney Stuckey added 21 points and Prince finished with 15 as Detroit played with its full complement of players for the first time since the start of the season.
