North Carolina is No. 1 -- in the Atlantic Coast Conference, in the national polls and now in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. A few hours after beating Clemson 86-81 in Charlotte to win a second straight ACC Tournament championship, the Tar Heels were made the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. As expected, Carolina is in the East Regional and opens play Friday in the RBC Center against the winner of the Coppin State-Mount St. Mary's play-in game on Tuesday night.

Duke fans who scooped up tickets in advance for the first and second rounds at the RBC Center, anticipating the Blue Devils' staying close to home, can ditch them. Duke is the No. 2 seed in the West Regional and will be in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to face Belmont [Tenn.] University.

Duke was shipped to D.C. in what amounted to a trade-off. Georgetown is the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Regional but plays its home games at the Verizon Center in downtown D.C., which is hosting first- and second-round games. Georgetown was placed in the tournament "pod" at the RBC Center that also includes Indiana, Gonzaga, Davidson and Arkansas.

The ACC hoped to have at least five schools selected. Clemson and Miami also received bids, but Virginia Tech was left out.
