Duke’s Cutcliffe names 5 team captains

Duke football coach David Cutcliffe announced Thursday the naming of Anthony Boone, Kelby Brown, Jeremy Cash, Jamison Crowder and Laken Tomlinson as team captains for the 2014 season. The five individuals were elected by their teammates.
Boone has been chosen as a team captain for the second straight season.
ACC: The conference leads all leagues with eight women’s soccer teams among the Soccer America Preseason Top 25, including four teams ranked among the top five and all eight among the Top 15.
Defending ACC champion Florida State holds the No. 2 spot behind defending NCAA champion UCLA. The ACC also holds the next three spots in the poll, with Virginia at No. 3, North Carolina at No. 4 and Virginia Tech at No. 5.
Duke holds the No. 10 spot in preseason poll, while Notre Dame is No. 11, Boston College is No. 13 and Wake Forest is No. 14.
Duke: Incoming freshman Nicolas Alvarez and his doubles partner Juan Jose Rosas, both from Peru, reached the quarterfinal round this week at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, topping Sharmal Dissanayake of Sri Lanka and Pavle Rogan of Montenegro in the first round by scores of 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, the Peruvian duo dropped a tough 6-4, 7-6 decision to Brazil’s Orlando Moraes Luz and Marcelo Zormann Silva.
East Carolina: After approval by the Board of Trustees, East Carolina has announced a five-year extension of coach Heather Macy’s contract that will keep her at the helm through the 2019-20 season, according to an announcement by director of athletics Jeff Compher.
