For the fourth time in six years, Duke has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the ACC.
The Blue Devils received 41 of 65 first place votes in Wednesday’s preseason poll and 935 points overall. North Carolina finished second in the voting, with 870 total points and 12 first place votes. Newcomer Louisville (847 points, 3 first-place votes), defending champion Virginia (824 points, seven first-place votes) and Syracuse (706 points, 3 first-place votes) rounded out the top 5. N.C. State was projected to finish ninth (478 points). Wake Forest, under new head coach Danny Manning, was picked to finish 12th in the 15-team league.
The teams in blue took home the individual awards as well. Tar Heels junior guard Marcus Paige was named the ACC Preseason player of the year, garnering 33 votes. And Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor earned 62 of the 65 votes for ACC Preseason Rookie of the year.
Both Paige and Okafor were on the Preseason all-ACC team and were joined by Louisville’s Montrezl Harrell, Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon and Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant.
