There were a lot of new names on N.C. State’s first depth chart of the 2014 season but not a lot of surprises.

With so many freshmen — 33 in the class, 30 enrolled — there was bound to be new blood in the two-deep for the Wolfpack this season.

Three true freshmen — WR Bo Hines, DT B.J. Hill, LG Tony Adams — will start against Georgia Southern on Saturday. Two more redshirt freshmen — S Josh Jones, LB Jerod Fernandez — will start on defense.

In all, there are 14 first- or second-year players in the 44 slots in the depth chart for offense and defense.

“We’ve got a lot of young players, everybody knows that,” Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said Monday in his weekly press conference.

Doeren also noted he will use a lot of players against the Eagles and all season. The goal is to win but also develop some of the young talent in the program.

Other than the freshmen who will start, Doeren singled out receiver Stephen Louis, who’s listed as Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s backup, and walk-on Naquan Brown (a senior) as two players who stood out in fall camp.

“(Louis) was trying to figure his way out in the spring and he really had a good fall camp,” Doeren said.

The most important part of Saturday’s game is starting the season with a win. N.C. State closed the 2013 season with eight straight losses. The Pack hasn’t won since last Sept. 28, a 48-14 win over Central Michigan.

“For us, it has been awhile since we finished the game and felt good about the end result,” Doeren said.
