Pete Thomas left Colorado State and was supposed to succeed Mike Glennon as N.C. State's quarterback.

It never quite went according to plan at N.C. State for Thomas, who will transfer after he graduates in the spring, the school announced on Friday.

Thomas is the second quarterback and 10th scholarship player to leave the program since the end of the 2013 season.

Thomas started six games in 2013 for the Wolfpack, throwing for 1,667 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions. Under NCAA rules, as a graduate Thomas will be eligible to play during the 2014 season.

Thomas, a two-year starter at Colorado State, transferred to N.C. State in 2011 and sat out the 2012 season. He was groomed by former coach Tom O'Brien to replace Glennon. O'Brien lost his job after the 2012 season and coach Dave Doeren brought in Arkansas graduate Brandon Mitchell to be the starter.

Mitchell beat out Thomas in the preseason and started the opener against Louisiana Tech but broke a bone in his left foot in the first half of the first game.

Thomas came in and started the next five games and at Boston College in November. He never quite fit in Doeren’s spread offense, which was a departure from the pro-style under O’Brien.

Doeren added freshman quarterback Jalan McClendon on Wednesday and talked about McClendon's fit in the offense as expected starter Jacoby Brissett's backup.

Manny Stocker also left the program after the season ended, which leaves walk-ons Garrett Leatham and Josh Taylor to fill out the depth chart behind Brissett and McClendon. Sophomore Bryant Shirreffs is still listed as a quarterback on the roster but he played more of a fullback role last season.

Receiver Travares Copeland, cornerback Marchez Coates, guard Cam Fordham, receiver Charlie Hegedus, safety J.J. Jones, running back Josh Mercer and fullback Logan Winkles are the other players who have left the program since the end of the season. Thomas was the only one of the 10 who started a game last season.

The status of left tackle Rob Crisp, who suffered a concussion early in the 2013 season, is unknown. Doeren declined to comment on Crisp on Wednesday. Crisp can apply for a medical redshirt but he's not listed on the Wolfpack roster.
