Wolfpack rebounds for win at Pitt

Rebounding has been an issue for NC State, but not in Monday’s big win at Pittsburgh.

The most amazing stat from Monday's 74-67 win at Pittsburgh for N.C. State wasn't T.J. Warren's scoring total but the number of offensive rebounds by Pitt.

The Panthers got just two offensive rebounds, and no second-chance points, in the Wolfpack's win. N.C. State has been one of the worst defensive rebounding teams in the in the country this season.

The Wolfpack's 22.8 defensive rebounds rank No. 261 in the NCAA and as a team it ranks No. 245 in rebounding margin (minus-1.4).

While Warren poured in 41 points, the Pack cleaned up on the boards, out-rebounding Pitt, 35 to 23. The Panthers went into the game leading the ACC in rebounding margin (plus-7.0).

If you look at how N.C. State has rebounded in ACC play, it has won five times in spite of its rebounding woes. Maryland had 22 offensive rebounds in a 65-56 loss in Raleigh in January. FSU had a staggering 24 second-chance points in a 74-70 loss in Raleigh.

And if you look at the Pack's nine losses, only in one — at Wake Forest on Jan. 15 — was rebounding not a problem. The Deacs had only three offensive rebounds for four second-chance points in that Wolfpack loss.

N.C. State is generally regarded as a poor defensive team, and it does have really bad stretches, but is the Wolfpack bad on defense or defensive rebounding?

Obviously, the numbers are related.
