Here’s the latest on the North Carolina SBI’s case against Terry Watson, the Georgia sports agent who has been charged with providing impermissible benefits to three former North Carolina football players.
Watson on Wednesday was charged in Orange County Court with 13 counts of providing illegal benefits to former UNC players Greg Little, Marvin Austin and Robert Quinn. Watson was released on $50,000 bond.
Watson’s arrest came six days after a former UNC tutor, Jennifer Wiley Thompson, was charged for her role in the case. She is accused of acting as an intermediary between Watson and Little, now a wide receiver in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns.
NCAA rules allow agents to have contact with college athletes, but prohibit agents from inducing athletes with gifts – including cash, meals or travel. North Carolina state law also prohibits agents from providing athletes with money and other benefits. This case is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.
