Noles determined to burst bubble talk

Looking at the new season

2006-07 RECORD: 22-13, 7-9, TIED FOR EIGHTH IN ACC - COACH: LEONARD HAMILTON (SIXTH SEASON, 87-71 AT FSU)

PLUS

* Lots of perimeter depth and experience. Toney Douglas, Isaiah Swann, Jason Rich and sub Ralph Mims all played extensively last season. The Douglas, Swann, Rich trio combined for more than 30 points per game..

* Coach Leonard Hamilton thinks the recruiting class could be one of the school's best ever.

MINUS

* It may take a village to replace Al Thornton, who led the team in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, steals, shooting percentage and almost everything else. The stats are only half the story. Someone else will have to emerge as the leader.

BEST-CASE SCENARIO

If Solomon Alabi and the other young big men come through, 18 overall wins and 8-8 in the conference could be possible.

WORST-CASE SCENARIO

Thornton's void goes unfilled and the offense collapses from the outside in, setting the stage for 12 to 14 wins overall and 4-12 in the league.

REALISTIC SCENARIO

15 to 16 overall wins and 6-10 in the ACC.

The X factor

BIGGEST NEED

Inside scoring. Last season, the Seminoles didn't have an inside presence who wasn't named Al Thornton, a first-team All-ACC selection and an NBA Draft lottery pick in June.

WHO WILL FILL IT

Junior Uche Echefu and sophomore Ryan Reid. Echefu averaged 6.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 35 starts opposite Thornton. Reid played in 35 games as a freshman, but teammates say he has made the most progress of any Seminoles player.

FANTASY LEAGUE PICK

Clemson forward James Mays. Mays plays with authority as a scorer and a rebounder.

Florida State guards Jason Rich, Isaiah Swann and Toney Douglas are only going to say this once.

This season, the Seminoles don't want to hear anything about bubbles or fences.

After missing the NCAA Tournament by a gnat's eyelash in two straight seasons and now without NBA lottery pick Al Thornton, the trio of veteran guards are responsible for making sure FSU gets in with room to spare.

The Noles know disappointment. Two seasons ago, they beat a highly ranked Duke team and went 9-7 in the ACC. They had to beat Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament's first round, didn't, and missed the NCAA.

Last season, FSU beat eventual national champion Florida and won at Duke. But Boston College delivered killer blows, beating the Seminoles twice, both on the final shot. FSU went 7-9 in ACC play.

"We learned the hard way that every possession counts, team defense counts, you know what I'm saying?" Douglas said. "It's not the coaches. it's us players. We gotta go out and do it."

Rich said the Seminoles have to avoid an early skid, like last season's 0-3 start in the ACC, and not give the tournament committee late reasons to doubt FSU's credentials.

FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said it's OK if the pain lingers.

"Whatever it takes to motivate a player, I'm all for it," Hamilton said. "But we lost three games [last season] on the last possession. We could have run the floor a little harder, defended a little better, had better shot selection."
