Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Mixon will not play for the Oklahoma Sooners this year.
The highly-touted freshman running back has been suspended for the season for an incident that, according to the Oklahoman, led to his being charged with one count of an "act resulting in gross injury."
Mixon allegedly punched a 20-year-old female student and broke four bones in her face at a Norman restaurant on July 25.
"As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way. As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student athletes, coaches and staff," OU athletics director Joe Castiglione and head coach Bob Stoops said in a joint statement released by the school.
Mixon can remain a student at the university but is excluded from all team activities.
