Saint Augustine’s fired football coach Michael Costa on Monday.
Michael Morand, the offensive coordinator, has been named the Division II Falcons’ interim head coach.
The school did not give a reason for the abrupt parting with Costa, who was in his 13th season and had been the Falcons’ only coach since the Raleigh school re-started their football program in 2002.
“We appreciate what Coach Costa has done for the team and Saint Augustine’s University,” St. Aug’s athletic director George Williams said in a statement posted on the school’s web site. “At this time, we feel it’s best to go in another direction.”
Never miss a local story.
Defensive coordinator Tremayne Henry was also fired on Monday.
The Falcons lost their opener 41-19 at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday. Costa had a 39-63 record with the Falcons.
Morand was previously an assistant at North Carolina A&T and Virginia State. The Falcons host Wingate on Saturday.
