UNC’s Bukauskas named finalist for Dick Howser Trophy
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the finalists for the 31st annual Dick Howser Trophy presented by The Game Headwear on Thursday. The list of four finalists includes North Carolina pitcher J.B. Bukauskas.
The other finalists are Louisville first baseman and pitcher Brendan McKay, Mississippi State first baseman Brent Rooker and Oregon State pitcher Jake Thompson.
Balloting was conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in conjunction with the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The winner will be announced on Saturday, June 17.
Each finalist embodies the major principles of character, leadership, desire, and competitive spirit exhibited by Dick Howser.
Bukauskas, a junior right-handed starter from Ashburn, Va., racked up a 9-1 overall record with a 2.53 ERA in 15 starts for UNC.
Track and Field
UNC: Kenny Selmon ran just two tenths of a second off of his lifetime best in the 400-meter hurdles to advance to the event final at the NCAA Championships Wednesday. He finished third in his heat with a time of 49.93 but advanced with the third-fastest time overall in the semifinals. Selmon competed in the 400-meter hurdles final on Friday.
Wake Forest: Senior Ellie Abrahamson finished fifth in her 3,000-meter steeplechase national semifinal heat on Thursday. She automatically qualified for the NCAA finals in the event which will be held Saturday. Robert Heppenstall competed in the men’s 800 final on Friday.
Duke: Rising sophomore center Marques Bolden has accepted an invitation to the participate in the 2017 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp in Colorado Springs from June 18-25.
Wake Forest: Incoming freshman guard Chaundee Brown was one of 28 players selected to participate at the 2017 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp.
N.C. State: Sophomore Devon Daniels has been invited to attend the 2017 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp.
ECU: The AAC announced each school's conference opponents for the 2017-18 campaign Thursday. The Pirates conference schedule features a home-and-home series against UConn, Houston, Memphis, USF, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa. They will host Wichita State and UCF in their lone meetings of the season and travel to Cincinnati and Temple for road-only matchups.
Campbell: Kenneth White has been promoted to assistant coach, head coach Kevin McGeehan announced Thursday. White has spent the last two seasons on the Camels staff, including the 2016-17 campaign as director of basketball operations.
Duke: Jack Bruckner, Kyle Rowe and Danny Fowler are the latest Blue Devils selected as 2017 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-Americans as announced by the organization Thursday.
N.C. State: The 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, set for Jan. 26-29, 2018, features the top 60 teams based on their rank in the final ITA/Oracle team poll. The No. 26 Wolfpack had the seventh pick in the draft and was selected as the No. 3 seed in the Lexington, Ky., host site. In the first round, the team will take on second-seeded and No. 23 UCLA.
Duke: The ITA recently announced Duke as one of 15 host sites for the 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. As host, the 12th-ranked Blue Devils garnered the top seed for the region with the No. 21 Tigers as the second seed, the No. 36 Huskies as the third seed and the Bulldogs as the fourth seed. The matches, set to occur in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, are scheduled to take place Jan. 27-28, 2018.
Duke: The ITA held its 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend draft for the men’s event on Thursday, resulting in the Blue Devils heading to TCU. The eighth-ranked Horned Frogs garnered the top seed for the region with No. 34 Louisville as the second seed, the No. 35 Blue Devils as the third seed and No. 47 San Diego as the fourth seed. The matches, set to occur at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, are scheduled to take place Jan. 27-28, 2018.
