COLLEGE PARK, MD. - From the opening tip, Chante Black looked ready to lead her team to Oklahoma City.A career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds later, Black and third-seeded Duke are moving on with a 67-59 NCAA Women's Tournament victory over Arizona State.Black was so dominant that her teammates gave her the ball on nearly every possession down the stretch."It could have been more," Abby Waner teased."You should have had 30!" Wanisha Smith chimed in from a spot on the locker room floor.Black's big performance, a good team effort on the boards and free-throw shooting enabled the Blue Devils (25-9) to survive a game in which they didn't play particularly smart and couldn't put away the Sun Devils (22-11) until the last minute.Duke will face No. 2 seed Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Sunday in the semifinals of the Oklahoma City Regional."That was a fantastic, dominant, dangerous performance," Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said of Black. "She was dangerous from the minute she stepped on the floor -- I mean she had to be guarded the minute she stepped on the floor. When she's demanding the ball -- I know her stats were great -- but sometimes, it's just a matter of the demand."Black made sure Duke won the tip and helped the Blue Devils leap out to an 8-0 lead. They were so sharp early that the disappointment of the Comcast Center crowd was almost palpable. But after the Blue Devils took a a 16-4 lead, the Sun Devils clogged up the paint and made it hard for Duke to get the driving layups. Offensively, they got around Duke's zone with effective screening and by using their bulk in the post.Faced with the traffic in the interior, Duke really struggled -- except for Black, who floated jumpers and used her athleticism to soar in for offensive rebounds. She finished the first half with 12 points and nine rebounds.Black said she purposely focused on her rebounding Tuesday night because she felt she hadn't been performing well on the glass. But the rest, she credited elsewhere."My teammates really wanted us to come out energized, but this time of the year, it's all about having fun and playing your best game. My teammates really pumped me up. They wanted me to have fun, and it carried over to the game."Behind Black's efforts, Duke outrebounded Arizona State 42-31 and scored 18 second-chance points. Those numbers helped a Blue Devils team that played smart early but made careless errors that allowed Arizona State to hang around. Although McCallie wasn't concerned about the 15 turnovers, her players admitted they should have played smarter."A lot of it came from just trying to make a big play," Smith said. "Especially the guards -- we're trying to make that play. At the end, we started taking more care of it and played with more poise, and it worked out for us."Arizona State cut Duke's lead to 59-57 with 1:40 left but never caught up. Black got fouled after snagging an offensive rebound and nailed her free throws. Then Joy Cheek grabbed another offensive rebound, was fouled and hit hers. Duke sank eight of 10 free throws, and Arizona State ran out of time -- Jill Noe missed a 3 with five seconds left.Black grabbed the rebound for a fitting end to her big night.
