All week Duke senior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis received treatment for a deep thigh bruise that limited his practice time. On Saturday, after the Blue Devils had fallen 34-16 to Miami, Duke coach David Cutcliffe said his quarterback was courageous in playing with pain.
Cutcliffe said Lewis finally was able to sit in his car on Thursday. Against the Hurricanes, he completed 20 of 37 passes for 303 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked once and intercepted once.
For his efforts, Lewis became Duke's career passing leader, breaking the school record held by Ben Bennett. He now has 9,678 yards.
Lewis moved into third place in ACC history for passing yardage, passing N.C. State's Jamie Barnette, Duke's Bennett and Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst.
Sophomore wide receiver Donovan Varner caught eight passes for 165 yards and a touchdown, which moved him into the school's top 10 single-season receiving list. It was his fourth 100-yard game of the season.
