COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
There are T-shirts for sale in the Comcast Center that cast Maryland as "the good," North Carolina "the bad" and Duke "the ugly."You'd think that in women's basketball, where there tend to be fewer fans and a lot less nastiness, Maryland's animosity wouldn't be as noticeable. But no.Asked why Maryland fans are hostile to Duke, the usually polite-to-a-fault Maryland forward Crystal Langhorne said: "It's Duke. Come on."On Sunday, some Maryland fans tailgated between sessions and returned to watch -- and heckle -- Duke's game against Murray State, the Duke players noticed.Murray State, of Murray, Ky., was the favorite of the Comcast crowd, which then emptied out after Duke's 78-57 win."I wasn't aware that College Park was such a hotspot for Murray State fans," said Duke's Abby Waner with a straight face. "I'm pretty sure we'll see a lot of Arizona State fans tomorrow night, too."The Duke women have decided to be amused by the attention, joking in the locker room that Maryland fans are "obsessed" with them. With 30 seconds left, Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie had her reserves pressing Murray State to the booing horror of the crowd.Afterward, McCallie asked why fans booed. On getting an explanation, she quipped, "That must be the turtle IQ."On Monday, McCallie was asked again about the Blue Devils' reception."I think it's just great for women's basketball to have a great environment in which to play," McCallie said. "If you think about it, the guys play in front of that all the time ... . I think the Maryland fans are terrific."
