Liberty QB Tommy Beecher completed 22 of 33 passes for 210 yards in last week's 33-20 loss to West Virginia.

If the Pirates can match that total against the Mountaineers, a second straight upset in the series will be possible.

It's going to take the ultimate keep-away performance if the Pirates (8-4, 7-1 C-USA) are going to keep the conference championship for another season.

Houston (10-2, 6-2) has been held below 30 points once, and that was a 29-28 win at Texas Tech in September.

With just a little more help from quarterback Patrick Pinkney and the rest of the offense, the Pirates should be able to survive this game, win the next two, finish 8-4 overall and get back to the league championship game.

Given the difficulty of the schedule, so many personnel ups and downs and the key injuries of late, 8-4 would have to rate as plenty respectable. But there's no doubt that Pinkney (10 interceptions, eight touchdown passes) needs to find his game, and fast.

In order to host the Conference USA title game next weekend, the Pirates (7-4, 6-1) will have to go through their primary nemesis. Southern Miss (7-4, 5-2) has won the past two, four of the past five and 11 of the past 13 in the series. But in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, with so much on the line, ECU is due.

Former Wake Forest quarterback Brett Hodges completed 15 of 20 passes for 141 yards last week in the Knights' victory over Buffalo.

That alone is cause for concern for an ECU secondary that has to be gun shy after getting worked over by run-first foes West Virginia and North Carolina in successive outings.
