Durham Jordan football standout Torrance Hunt, an extremely quick 150-pound defensive back, has a quick retort whenever his ability to play college football is questioned.

"I've been small my entire life, and that has never stopped me from getting the job done," said the 5-foot-8 Hunt.

East Carolina obviously has no concerns about his size; the Pirates offered him a scholarship, and he accepted last week.

Purdue, N.C. State, North Carolina and Duke were showing interest, but Hunt said he is now totally committed to ECU coach Skip Holtz.

"The East Carolina program feels like family to me," Hunt said. "The players and coaches were very welcoming to me, and their players get their degrees.

"East Carolina is where I want to go to college."

Hunt is one of the fastest high school football players in the country. He was timed in 4.22 for a 40-yard sprint at the Shrine Bowl Combine in Apex, but he prefers to list his 4.25 electronically timed 40 at the Nike Combine in Baltimore.

That day he turned in a 4.30 on his 40 and came back with a 4.29 on his second attempt. He was asked to run one more time to make sure there hadn't been a malfunction and popped off the 4.25.

He also recorded an outstanding 40.1-inch vertical jump and a remarkable 4.37-second 20-yard shuttle run at Baltimore.

Hunt doesn't see himself as a fast guy playing football. He is a football player who is quick and fast.

He was used primarily as a cornerback during the 2007 season and had 71 tackles, five interceptions and 14 pass deflections.

He is glad to have his college decision behind him.

"Knowing where I'm going to school is going to make my senior year much easier," he said.

Hunt said East Carolina recruited him as a wide receiver and return man.

MIDDLE CREEK BASEBALL: Middle Creek had some students make recent college baseball commitments.

Center fielder Landon Adams has committed to North Carolina. He hit .477 for the Mustangs last spring.

Pitcher John Atkinson (7-3 last season) and catcher Josh Powell each signed with Chowan University in Murfreesboro.

Pitcher Johnny Crouse (2-0, three saves) is headed to Milligan College in Elizabethton, Tenn.

HEELS LAND PUNTER: North Carolina received a football commitment from C.J. Feagles last week.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound punter from Ridgewood, N.J., is the son of New York Giants punter Jeff Feagles.

The Tar Heels have 12 known commitments, according to scout.com.
