East Carolina's trustees have approved a five-year contract for men's basketball coach Mack McCarthy.

The deal, which was approved Thursday, will pay McCarthy $225,000 per year in base salary and compensation for radio, television and Pirate Club appearances. The contract also includes a $50,000 bonus to monitor academic goals such as continuing to improve the program's grade-point average and graduation rate.

The school decided to keep McCarthy in March after he led the program to its highest wins total in four years as an interim coach. ECU (11-19) also beat N.C. State for its first win against an ACC opponent.

FOOTBALL

MIAMI WILL USE TWO QBS: Miami football coach Randy Shannon still hasn't selected a starting quarterback, but he said Thursday that he'll use two of them in games this season. However, he's not revealing which two have the inside track on field time.

The Hurricanes don't have a quarterback on the roster with any college snaps on his resume. Jacory Harris is a true freshman, Robert Marve is a redshirt freshman and both were Florida high school record-setters. Cannon Smith also is in his first year.

SPURRIER ISN'T LEAVING: Steve Spurrier says he has no plans to step away as South Carolina coach or as chief playcaller.

Spurrier said Thursday he'll spend more time working with the quarterbacks than he did his first three years with the program.

Spurrier laughed off speculation that growing frustration trying to build South Carolina into a contender in the Southeastern Conference would lead him to walk away, as he did after two terrible years with the NFL's Washington Redskins.

The Gamecocks were 6-1 and ranked No. 6 nationally last year before losing their final five games.

HARVIN RECOVERING: Florida receiver Percy Harvin is "ahead of schedule" in his return from right heel surgery in April, coach Urban Meyer said Thursday.

Meyer said Harvin, one of the nation's most dynamic players, has started running full speed and should be ready to go when the Gators begin practice next month.

Despite the nagging injury, Harvin ran for 764 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore last season and caught 59 passes for 858 yards and four scores.

CUTCLIFFE ADDS STAFF: Duke football coach David Cutcliffe announced the addition of five staff members.

Luke Barthel joins the program as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, and Tom Long be the video coordinator. Tom McMinn will be the equipment manager, Wesley Pickell will be the football equipment manager, and Jay Bissette will be the assistant football equipment manager.
